“12 weeks on Billboard Hot 100 chart and Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” does not seem to slow down. The song is currently at #7 while it peaked at #3 spot at one time. The song describes the mental torture a person goes through after a breakup. Juice WRLD explains this situation as a state of lucid dreaming. By definition, lucid dreaming is when the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming, in which case, they are able to fully experience the dream to its full effect.
“Lucid Dreams” appeared on Juice WRLD’s ‘JuiceWRLD 9 9 9’ mixtape released on June 15, 2017. After a year, the song gained much popularity when Juice WRLD’s “All Girls Are the Same” song got published on Cole Bennet’s YouTube channel.
Juice WRLD took to Genius.com to comment his feedback on the song;
“The day I wrote Lucid Dreams, it was an ordinary day, just regular routine. I would just sit in my family room and play beats on the stereo, just write to them, so yeah, nothing out of the ordinary.” – genius.com

The lyrics to “Lucid Dreams” are not that complicated. However, the song tells a valid story throughout the song.
For Genius.com, Juice WRLD said the following is what he takes away from the song;
“A few different things actually, I mean, people that have gone through sleep paralysis kind of would understand the context of “Lucid Dream” more than others, but the message I want people to know is, just be aware of your feelings. Really, just be aware of your feelings, and I think that’s pretty much what it did for people, in a way.” – genius.com
Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Lucid Dreams”
Chorus
The chorus of “Lucid Dreams” jumps straight into the distorted mind of Juice WRLD right after his breakup. He endures sleep paralysis-a state where you cannot sleep, and sleep depravitymakes you see and feel obscure things. He says he sees shadows of her in the room. Obviously, she is physically not present in the room, so we have to credit these hallucinationsto his sleep paralysis.
His mind is quite distorted that he is unsure of his feelings as well. He loves her so much that he cannot shut his eyes and have a sleep. For this torture, he hates her as well. For him, there just is no going back from the love he gave out.
She turned out to be not the one he expected her to be. Differences in expectations in a relationship often lead to ugly outcomes. We just have to remember that ‘expectations’ are our thing, not our partner’s thing. The partner is not bound by anything to live up to your expectations of her.
When things went south, she moved on and he did not. He expected everything he wanted from a girl who wasn’t everything he wanted. He believes he is the best guy for her, but even we have doubts about that.

Verse
Juice WRLD took the breakup so hard that he compares the post-breakup life to being dead. And in the next line, he confesses that the girl despised him as well (probably towards the latter part of their relationship). So, he believes she got what she wanted all along. But only he himself dug his own grave.
Juice WRLD quite openly talks about taking pills in “Lucid Dreams” song. He took some pills to numb his pain. But he regrets those decisions now. He knows his problem is in his head, and no matter how many pills he takes, the problem won’t go away. Drugs are never a permanent fix to any problem. The drugs made his problems worse-as these drug infused hallucinations made him lose control of reality and of his lucid dreams. He was helpless in real life and in his own head.
‘Lucid Dreams’ is when you are aware that you are in a dream. Some are even able to control their dreams while in this state. But, what Juice WRLD experienced was something else. He could not ‘move a thing’ in his lucid dreams-which is called ‘sleep paralysis.’

She was his world, to the extent that he even imagined a wedding with her. Maybe she did not want the same thing. Right expectations bound around wrong people leads to disasters.
Friends could be your saving grace in most occasions. However, we are too blind for our own good when we are in love, that we forget to listen to our friends. Usually, an outside party can see the situation of a couple better.
Evil comes in all shapes and sizes and looks. Juice WRLD learned this the hard way. An innocent face and a cute smile probably got him hooked so bad that he wanted his life with her. But she had different intentions. Maybe, in her story, Juice WRLD is the bad guy…
WRLD thinks she was flawed when he met her, yet, he graciously loved her and rescued her. But in return, she broke his heart into pieces, never to be repaired.
Outro
These lyrics contain bits and pieces of the song from here and there, much like his distorted thought process.
One interesting twist at the end of the song is that what he previously believed-that he was the better guy than whom she picked after their breakup, had changed at the end. He says “you found another…better one…” as opposed to the previous lyric “You found another one, but I am the better one…” Is he finally accepting the reality of the situation? If so, there might be some hope for WRLD.
“Lucid Dreams” speak about one of the toughest breakups we have ever witnessed in a song in recent history. It is unclear if Juice WRLD drew this out of his personal experiences, but it does seem awfully realistic and personal.
