BMW X7 by type
BMW X7 generations
The X7 is BMW's top-of-the-range X-Series SUV model. It also acts as the German marque's SUV equivalent to its 7-Series executive saloon car. BMW added the massive kidney grilles because it believed the X7 deserved to have an imposing appearance. It's soft and cosy inside, with premium quality full-Merino leather upholstery and metal surfaces with a piano black finish. The range of power output choices is also great, with the entry-level 261 bhp xDrive40d diesel delivering a 0-62-mph dash in 6.1 seconds and topping at 155 mph. If you go for the range-topping M50i engine, you can hit 62 mph in under 4.7 seconds from rest.
What should you expect to find in a BMW X7?
The BMW X7 is available in a standard trim badged as base X7. The higher-spec trims include the M Sport and the range of M Performance models. In addition, there's a limited-run X7 Griffin version that rests between the 2 upper-spec trims. The list of standard equipment on the basic trim is impressive, including:
- Automatic headlights and wipers
- Bluetooth and wireless charging
- Cruise control
- DAB radio
- Front comfort seats
- Heated front and rear seats
- LED fog lights
- WiFi hotspot
The standard X7 trim also comes with the iDrive infotainment system, including automatic air conditioning, real-time traffic updates and Apple CarPlay. The M Sport is the sportiest X7 variant and includes several sport-focused features, such as:
- 21-inch alloy wheels
- M Sport braking system
- M leather steering wheel
- Sport auto transmission
- M badges on the exterior
The X7 Griffin trim offers the same features as the standard trim, but it also adds a set of dark-tinted rear windows, hill-start assist and electronic climate control. The M Performance range lets you choose between the diesel M50d or petrol M50i engine. With both powertrains, you'll get adaptive LED headlights and M Sport suspension. It also includes Cerium-grey exhaust tips, M Sport seat belts and a Harmon-Kardon stereo system.

Used BMW X7 FAQ's
1
Does the BMW X7 drive and handle well?
It's worth keeping in mind that BMW considers comfort over an exciting drive for the X7. However, the large SUV is still among the most exciting in its category, especially on long countryside roads. The air suspension perfectly absorbs high bumps and road surface undulations while also keeping road and wind noise at a minimum. For an even more relaxing ride, add the BMW Driving Assistant Professional option pack. It helps you stay in your lane by braking and accelerating as necessary.
2
What engine options does the BMW X7 offer?
You get to choose between 2 diesel and 2 petrol engines for the X7, although the choices are limited to specific trim levels. At the low end is the 261 bhp 3.0litre xDrive30d diesel and the 335 bhp 3.0-litre xDrive40i petrol engine. The higher end of the range includes the 395 bhp 3.0-litre M50d diesel and the powerful 523 bhp 4.4-litre V8 M50i petrol engine. The diesel units are the most economical power options, while the petrol units deliver the quickest power.
3
Is the BMW X7 SUV a comfortable drive?
Some luxury SUVs perform dismally in passenger comfort, but that's not the case with BMW's largest SUV. It's incredibly spacious with massive legroom and headroom, even for middle-row and third-row passengers. The driver also gets a range of seat and steering adjustment options. In addition, you can electronically fold down or adjust the middle row of seats whenever your rear passengers need more room.
4
How much boot space do you get in the BMW X7?
You get a decent 326-litre boot space with all seats upright in place. Folding down the third row increases the cargo room to an impressive 750 litres, which is more than enough for your everyday journey. You can also fold the second-row seats if you need more space, opening up a massive van-like 2,120-litre cargo area for your luggage.
5
What suitable alternatives are there for the BMW X7?
The list of luxury SUVs striving to knock the X7 off its lofty position is long, with badge preferences being the primary determinant. Otherwise, suitable alternatives to the X7 will depend on whether your priority is comfort, off-road capability, luxury or straight-line performance. For off-road performance, consider the Range Rover, while the Audi Q8 makes up for luxury and performance gaps in the X7.
6
What is the Euro NCAP safety rating for the BMW X7?
The Euro NCAP has never rated the BMW X7, but considering its extensive safety features, you can be sure that it's a safe car. It comes with up-to-date driver assistance and active driver safety features, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive LED headlights, driver alert monitoring and cruise control. In addition, even its smaller BMW X5 cousin scored a 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.
